We packed up after 5 nights in Fairbanks and began our trip home. We plan to stop in Jasper, Banff, and Glacier National Parks on the way, but it will be a long ride down the Alaska-Canada Highway, or the Alcan for short, to get there.
Just south of Fairbanks is the City of North Pole and the Eielson Air Force Base. First stop, the North Pole, AK. All the letters to Santa at the North Pole end up here. There's also the tourist favorite, The Santa House. Actually a pretty neat place.
Downtown has candy cane street lights.
Here's the famous Santa House.
And his reindeer parked outside.
Inside, the store was jam-packed with Christmas stuff.
How true!
Santa enjoys having his picture taken. Sorry it's a bit blurry - he must have been in light speed mode....
And of course there's a giant Santa outside.
Just down the road, we hoped to see some jets at Eielson AFB. We weren't disappointed. This B-52 must have just come in for a landing, with his drag chute still hanging out behind.
One of the many refueling tanker planes parked at the base.
And another parked B-52.
As we drove south, we spotted this B-52 coming in for a landing.
It circled around and really gave us a show!
A few miles down the road, we stopped to check out Rika's Roadhouse at Big Delta State Historical Park, a gathering place for Alaskan travelers since 1904. You can read more about it here.
Out at the barnyard, this guy got our attention - we couldn't tell if the noises he was making was a baaaaa....or a belch. It turned out to be a real low-pitched baaaaa.
The drive south to Tok had lots of nice scenery.
This will likely be our last blog post for a few days as we'll be entering Canada, where wifi is not available everywhere and our broadband card won't work there. Hopefully we'll be back in the lower 48 in about a week and then back home about Labor Day.
