After a truck wash and some rest, we decided to go soak our tired bones in the hot springs about 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks. We had hoped for a motorcycle ride, but a forecast of showers and thunderstorms had us riding in the truck.
The hot springs are privately owned. There's a lodge, activities, and even the "Ice Bar". We decided to pay the $10 each for a dip in the hot springs, but passed on the $15 Ice Bar tour. Mainly because the included martini was served in a souvenir glass made of ice....how long is that going to last!?
Here's the hot springs soak spot.
The water in the hottest spots within the pool was too hot to take. Luckily the temperature varied so we could find a comfort zone. This is a favorite of locals and others in the winter. They come here to soak in the hot springs and watch the northern lights. That would be so cool! We thought about how nice it would be to be rich enough to just fly up, hang out for a day or so to enjoy this, then fly back. Keep buying those lotto tickets!
After our dip, we got some pics of the local moose. There were about three of them and we figured they feed them behind the garden to keep them coming in for the guests to get pictures.
It was getting well into evening by the time we drove back. We counted about 5 moose total along about 30 miles of the drive back. One so close we could see the bugs pestering the poor thing about to death.
Back at the camp, we grilled some burgers while enjoying this very cool sunset. This is the view to the east. The sky was also bright to the north, reminding us that the arctic sunset would probably last all night long.
Tomorrow is the day we start working our way back south to the lower 48.
