The drive north from Whistler on Hwy 93 was brutal. 15% grades going up and 13% going down. It was slow going, but we made it. The views were worth it though.
We stopped for some lunch at this overlook of the Seton Lake Reservoir.
What surprised us though as that stop was the beginning of the "other" side of the mountains, which unlike the green, wet forests on one side, were dry and desert-like. It was still cool though, just dry.
We drove until almost dark and camped in another free spot, the Walmart parking lot in Quesnel, BC.
The next day we made our way through Prince George and westward. One of the rest stops along the way in Houston, BC was packed full so we stopped to see what the action was all about. Turns out is was the World's Biggest Fly Rod.
Not too much further down the road we found a park named the 'Ksan Campground, in Hazelton, BC. It is owned by the local tribal government. You can read about them here: http://www.ksancampground.com/
Very nice people and campground - also with a great view!
Here's a pic of their re-created 'Ksan Historical Village.
Tomorrow it's off for a cycle ride to Prince Rupert.
Hey we stayed at Ksan Campground too. We drove along the Skeena River and out to Prince Rupert, but didn't go back as we went on the ferry and did the inland passage...Ketchikan, Petersburg and Juneau then off at Skagway. Isn't the scenery just awesome? We made a special trip through Quesnal to see the big gold pan. As you do the Alaskan Highway you will be driving a little slower. Hopefully by now the big heaves in the road will have settled down a little. And yes, things in Canada are quite a bit more expensive...but what the heck this is a once in a lifetime trip!
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm really enjoying your blog! Will you be able to print it off when you're finished?
